Personal Trainer or Not

GREAT, you have finally decided to get into shape, but how and where do you start? After all, you may not have worked out in a while and you may not think you can do it. You are wrong! PIKE FITNESS CENTER located on route 739 in Dingmans Ferry PA 18337 (570) 686-9496 has some interesting advice for you.

The primary reason for failure in fitness and wellness programs is lack of planning; it is not your ability. What are your goals and where are you now? The point is to get started, start slowly, be realistic, and realize that your current physical condition, or decondition, may be holding you back. So here are your choices for where to get started:

1.      Home workout

2.      Join a gym

3.      Personal Training (Home or Gym)

The home workout plan is convenient, but are you disciplined enough to follow through? After all, you have been postponing any intervention to date. But it is possible today with videos, books and computer/phone apps to begin a home program; however, there are limitations:

·        Life at home can get busy and priorities get in the way

·        No one can see you cheating or correct your form and provide feedback

·        Investment in equipment, though not essential, can be expensive

Home workout programs save time and money but only a few can commit to make it a success. One way to make it work is to have a workout buddy. An experienced friend can help introduce you to routines, equipment and keep you on track. Nevertheless, staying motivated long enough to see results can be an issue for both partners. Boredom, consistency, and lack of feedback are major downsides to a home program.

Membership to a community gym or fitness center such as PIKE FITNESS CENTER is not necessarily expensive. The facility provides you with access to all the expensive equipment that you would rather not buy or store in your house. Also, at PIKE FITNESS CENTER, exercise classes such are included in the membership. When choosing a gym membership, be sure to check if these services are included. While many gyms do not include them, PIKE FITNESS CENTER does!

A workout buddy at the gym is still a good option. If you don’t already have one, you can easily befriend someone at the gym who probably has similar goals. This reduces boredom and provides variety and supportive feedback. PIKE FITNESS CENTER’s staff members are available to get you started, tour the facility, instruct in proper use of equipment, and prevent you from being overwhelmed.

At home, there is no one to guide you or progress your program. Additionally, typical fitness center staff are there to orient you and assist, but they are not all personal trainers. If you are a beginner or even an experience member, you may need guidance or re-motivation to get your health and life back on track. Personal Trainers are knowledgeable professionals with the experience to start you on your way or even take the veteran member to the next level.

A plan, guidance, and feedback are essential, as well as attention to the following areas:

1.      Proper form to prevent injury

2.      Body mechanics especially with weight lifting

3.      Program with balance between cardiovascular and muscle building routines

4.      Diet and nutritional recommendations

5.      Motivational couching

A Personal Trainer will address these issues and help you establish achievable goals as well as formulate a personalized fitness program. But is it expensive? Everything is relative, and the question should be can you afford to fail in your fitness endeavors. You don’t necessarily have to have a long-term commitment to your trainer and you can limit the number and duration of training sessions. PIKE FITNESS CENTER has affordable beginner personal training packages, and a 20% discount for current members and options for non-members. Failure, injury, or - worse of all - “giving-up” are all more expensive. Expensive to your health and wellness, expensive to your ego and self-worth. The benefit of success will make your decision to get started the right one. At PIKE FITNESS CENTER (570) 68MYGYM WE HAVE EVERYTHING YOU NEED:

The Life Long Benefits of Exercise

So, what are the actual benefits of exercise? It seems like a lot of work to me. At Pike Fitness Center located on route 739 located in Dingmans Ferry PA, would like you to consider the following facts. The truth is, exercise helps you feel younger, fresher and live longer. It is no joke — these are real benefits of regular exercise. People that perform any level of physical fitness are at lower risk of dying, according to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Physical Fitness: What the Benefits of Exercise Mean for You

Research also shows that exercise enhances sleep, prevents weight gain, and reduces the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and even depression.

"One study found that when breast cancer survivors engaged in exercise, there were noticeable enhancements in physical activity, strength, weight control, and general well-being," as observed by Rachel Permuth-Levine, PhD, deputy director for the Office of Strategic and Innovative Programs at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health.

A second study of patients with stable heart failure determined that exercise relieved their symptoms, improved quality of life, reduced hospitalization, and in some cases, reduced the risk of death.”  Dr. Permuth-Levine. She notes that exercise isn't just important for people who are already living with health conditions: "If we can see benefits of moderate exercise in people who are recovering from disease, we might see even greater benefits in those of us who are generally well."

Physical Fitness: Exercise Fundamentals

Physical activity doesn't have to be strenuous to produce results. Even moderate exercise five to six times a week can lead to lasting health benefits.

When incorporating more physical activity into your life, remember three simple guidelines:

1.            Exercise at moderate intensity for at least 2 hours and 30 minutes spread over the course of each week.

2.            Avoid periods of inactivity; some exercise at any level of intensity is better than none. Get up and walk around during that commercial.

3.            At least twice a week, supplement aerobic exercise (cardio) with weight-bearing activities that strengthen all major muscle groups.

Physical Fitness: Making Exercise a Routine

The number one reason why most people say they don't exercise is lack of time. If you find it difficult to fit extended periods of exercise into your schedule, keep in mind that short bouts of physical activity in 10-minute segments will nonetheless help you achieve health benefits. Dr. Permuth-Levine states, "Even in the absence of weight loss, relatively brief periods of exercise every day reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease."

Set truthful goals and take small steps to fit more movement into your daily life, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator and walking to the grocery store instead of driving. "The key is to start gradually and be prepared," says Permuth-Levine. "Have your shoes, pedometer, and music ready so you don't have any excuses."

To help you stick with your new exercise habit, vary your routine, like swimming one day and walking the next. Get out and start a baseball or soccer game with your kids. Even if the weather doesn't cooperate, have a plan B — use an exercise bike in your home, scope out exercise equipment at a nearby community center, or consider joining a health club. The trick is to get to the point where you look at exercise like brushing your teeth and getting enough sleep — as essential to your well-being.

Remember that physical fitness is attainable. Even with small changes, you can reap big rewards that will pay off for years to come.

When you are ready, we are here to help you transition into a healthy daily routine. At Pike Fitness Center, we have daily classes of various levels, cardio and weight lifting equipment, but most of all, we will help you get started.
